Lubrication failure is the main cause of performance degradation of friction moving parts. Self-lubricating polymer composites provide an effective way to solve this problem. Recent progress in self-lubricating polymer materials was summarized. Three kinds of self-lubricating composites including nanoparticles-based, microcapsules-based and porous composites were introduced. The research advances of microcapsules-based self-lubricating polymer composites in recent years were analyzed and summarized emphatically. Self-lubricating mechanism, microencapsulation method, types of core and wall materials, the tribological properties and anti-friction mechanism of microcapsules-based self-lubricating polymer composites were mainly emphasized. Furthermore, the current challenges and their solutions in this field were proposed, the future development of the self-lubricating polymer composites was prospected. © 2020, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
