Recently, as eco-friendly mobility has rapidly spread, high efficiency, high output, miniaturization, and reliability of drive motors are required. Among eco-friendly mobility, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is widely used in electric vehicles (EVs) for high efficiency, high output, and miniaturization of drive motors, but fault diagnosis is essential to increase reliability. Among motor faults, eccentric faults in the drive motor can reduce driving performance by causing vibration noise and reduced torque precision. This paper proposes a fault diagnosis method through characteristic analysis using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and experiment using a Variable Reluctance (VR) resolver. Unlike Hall sensors and encoders, VR resolvers have a high rated temperature and are the most robust, so they are used as position sensors in EVs and other fields. Therefore, when performing fault diagnosis using a VR resolver, no additional sensors are needed, which has the advantage of being cost-effective. © 2024 Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.
