摘要
Liquid crystals in spherical droplets are highly sensitive to surfactants that control their orientation at interfaces. These molecules are widely used in optics. We fabricated 5CB liquid crystal droplets using SDS, CTAB, and DTAB surfactants at varying concentrations. We observed the transition from bipolar to radial at SDS concentration of 0.4 mM in 80 s, and from radial to bipolar at SDS concentration of 0.5 mM in 45 s. Surfactant concentration is the primary factor affecting liquid crystal droplet configuration, while headgroup, tail length, and architecture have minimal impact beyond the amount of absorbed surfactant in nematic liquid crystal droplets.
