摘要
In the modern world where packaged food and beverages are becoming more and more common, the necessity to research an alternative packaging technique with reduced health hazards is the need of the hour. Food packaging is increasingly focusing on using natural, biodegradable, and bioavailable polymers due to their environmentally friendly characteristics. UV protection is crucial in maintaining the integrity and quality of food products, ensuring they reach consumers with their intended characteristics intact. To enhance the UV protection characteristics of packaging materials, small additions of biocompatible materials with high light absorption can be incorporated. Cellulose and its derivatives, from natural sources, are widely used in the packaging sector for their affordability and versatility. Cellulose is a popular choice for integrating UV protection into packaging materials, mitigating the potential impact of UV radiation on chemical and physical attributes. Compounds like flavonoids and related phenylpropanoids exhibit exceptional UV radiation absorption capabilities, serving as a primary defense mechanism employed by plants to endure stressful conditions induced by the accumulation of harmful solar radiation. The synergistic combination of cellulose and flavonoids creates innovative packaging materials that are biodegradable, non-toxic and possess inherent radiation-shielding capabilities. This integration aligns with sustainable and eco-friendly practices, contributing to the development of effective and environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
