摘要
The use of renewable energy in electricity generation, especially wind and solar, has grown throughout the world. However, the intermittency of wind and solar generation requires flexible electricity generation systems. This article analyzes the use of natural gas in the complementary generation of electricity within the energy transition scenario. Natural gas presents several strengths and opportunities, such as, broad international trade, high-efficiency technologies for electricity generation, and a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 60%, in comparison with coal-fired power plants. But there are weaknesses and threats that can make it difficult to use natural gas to generate electricity like, as example, policies to encourage the use of renewable energy and the development of energy storage technologies. The COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical risks involving the international trade of natural gas have put pressure on the cost of natural gas, which has shown great volatility in recent years and, consequently, has affected the competitiveness of the fuel. Based on all the factors presented, it is possible to state that natural gas, despite being a fossil fuel, has, and will continue to play in the coming years, a fundamental role in ensuring the stability of the electricity supply in the scenario of expansion of wind and solar energy.
