CHARGE FLUCTUATIONS IN HOBA2CU3OX (6-LESS-THAN-X-LESS-THAN-7) AND HOBA2CU4O8 AS STUDIED BY INELASTIC NEUTRON-SCATTERING

The line shapes of the lowest crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations of Ho3+ in HoBa2Cu3Ox (6 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 7) and HoBa2Cu4O8 turn out to be highly asymmetric for all the superconducting samples, while they remain Gaussian for the non-superconducting ones. Since these asymmetries increase with increasing oxygen content x, we believe that they are related to the level of doping of the CuO2 planes. A CEF model including low-energy charge fluctuations of the type Cu+2O-2+delta <-> (CuO-2)-O-+2+delta in the superconducting planes is able to reproduce quantitatively the observed asymmetries.
