Ion-selective field effect transistors (ISFETs) are micro-electronic sensors which offer a method of monitoring the pH of heart muscle (myocardium) during open-heart surgery. Experience gained from experiments carried out in Newcastle upon Tyne has been used in the application of these sensors for a continuous in vivo monitoring of the state of the myocardium during surgery.
