摘要：
An alternate derivation of a well-known coupled-mode theory of dielectric waveguides is presented to discuss the roles of slowly varying amplitude approximation and phase matching condition. The approach is based on two vector wave equations for electric and magnetic fields and no approximations are needed. The resulting coupled-mode equations for ideal modes are shown to be the same as those coming directly from Maxwell's equations.
