Trial runs were taken in pilot plant scale to corroborate the findings of the laboratory in preparing a cationic polyelectrolyte, an.ionene polymer. The efficacy of the polymer in breaking an oil-in-water emulsion has also been studied. It has been shown that the polyelectrolyte can be used as an oilfield chemical for separation of oil from the effluent generated at the oilfields. The required dose for this purpose has been found to be about 10 ppm of the polymer based on the weight of the effluent. The removal of the oil from the effluent is as high as 98-99 per cent based on the oil present in the effluent.
