Laboratory experiments were made by thermally treating various kinds of shale oils, including Jordan Lajjun, China Fushun and Moaming shale oils. Under the most favorable conditions the pour point of the Jordan shale oil was significantly reduced and its rheological properties greatly improved, due to the formation of a pour point depressant from the components of the shale oil during thermal treatment. The pour point depressant was separated by extraction. It has been found that the additive contains sulfur compounds which were formed from components other than asphaltene contained in the Jordan shale oil. The pour point depressant thus formed is found to be ineffective for reducing the pour point of China Daquing and Pucheng crude oils.
