The free energy of a vortex-antivortex pair in a Josephson-coupled layered superconductor is derived within the framework of the Lawrence-Doniach theory. The vortex-antivortex pair consists of two two-dimensional pancake vortices of opposite vorticity within one superconducting layer. The free energy of large pairs is found to depend linearly on the pair separation, and, therefore, the Kosterlitz-Thouless theory, which assumes a logarithmic interaction, is not applicable to the CuO2 superconductors.
