摘要：
Following a brief general comparison of open-shell atoms with closed-shell atoms as probed with the aid of electron spectrometry, highlights are presented from the first wide-ranging studies of the prototype open-shell atoms chlorine and oxygen. The experimental approach, autoionization processes in Cl, population of fine-structure states in Cl, photoionization in the K shell of O, and deexcitation processes of K shell excited and ionized oxygen are discussed.
