CORROSION IN LIME-LIMESTONE SLURRY SCRUBBERS FOR COAL-FIRED BOILER FLUE-GASES

In corrosion tests conducted during a period of 5 one-half years, more than 2000 specimens of metals and nonmetals were exposed in prototype scrubber systems for cleaning flue gases at a coal-fired steam plant. The value of cleanliness to reduce localized corrosion was evident from the test results. The chloride content of process slurry or deposited solids, stress in stainless steel equipment (residual or cyclic), and temperature were factors involved in localized corrosion of metals. Blisters in neoprene linings were noted after several years of operation.
