摘要：
Designs for achieving population inversion in both electrically and optically pumped intersubband lasers are discussed. The current debate surrounding the exact nature of the polarization selection rules for intersubband transitions is reviewed and the implication for vertical cavity operation and optically pumped devices is highlighted.
