CONDITIONING RADIOACTIVE-WASTE FOR REPOSITORY STORAGE

Repository conditions have been established in the Federal Republic of Germany which are of a preliminary character pending a plans approval decision. They constitute a solid base for conditioning radioactive waste. Also conditioning procedures leading to waste packages fit for repository storage have been developed and are being employed in practice. In this respect, the basic technical preconditions exist for an orderly disposal of radioactive waste generating negligible amounts of heat. Against this background, the repository storage of radioactive waste generating negligible amounts of heat now is mainly a matter of political feasibility, or the lack of it, and of public acceptance.
