The interior space and the place of memory

The anthropology of the early modern age renews magnificently the metaphors of the memory and the representations of its "place". When thinking of the idea of memory, what nuance is implied by its collocation on high or deep down, in the mind or in the heart? Between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries thought, spirituality, physiology, even narrative, lay the foundations for the discovery of a profound, often involuntary memory, on which personal identity depends. Some texts of memoirs (the example here is the Memoires of Nicolas Fontaine) allow us to foresee the close link between the "invention" of the interior space and the origin of the modern autobiographical genre.
