(IS THERE A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT CRACKINGS OF THE EMBRYO AND THE YIELD IN DWARF-BUSH BEANS (PHASEOLUS-VULGARIS L)

The beans of the South African propagation lines show a particularly sensitive reaction to the relatively rare occurring cracking of the cotyledons, whereas they are insensitive to the frequently occurring cracking of the epicotyl. Inverse results are achieved from the plants of the USA propagation lines. They show only a slight decrease in yield by the frequently occurring cracking of the cotyledons, whereas they are considerably more sensitive, with greater diminished yields, to the rarer cracking of the epicotyl. The reaction of the beans to their typical cracking may be a criterion for agronomic value.
