The Mersey estuary in northwest England is considered to be one of the most polluted estuaries in the U.K. receiving the untreated wastewater from a large conurbation as well as discharges from an extensive range of industrial processes. In this paper; we discuss the distribution and behaviour of two trace metals in the waters and suspended particulate matter of the estuary. The data form part of consecutive collaborative programmes with North West Water (NWW) between 1980 and 1984. The first programme; between NWW and Liverpool University (LU); was a general survey of metal distributions in the estuary and involved monthly longitudinal sampling of the estuary during 1980 and 1981. The second programme; between NWW and WRc Environment; was partly funded by the Department of the Environment U.K. (DOE) and attempted to estimate the flux of dissolved and particulate trace metals at the mouth of the Mersey estuary. Longitudinal exercises were also conducted in 1982 (twice); 1983 (twice) and 1984) (once). The overlap in both scientific basic and personnel between these two studies makes it appropriate for a common presentation of results covering a 4-year time span.Certain of the data in this paper are presented with the permission of the Department of the Environment U.K. The phase of the study at Liverpool University was supported by NWW under contract number 401/071/DGET/MA. Financial support for this work from NWW (Part 1); providing a fellowship for JAC; and DOE (Part 2) is acknowledged. The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors; and not necessarily those of NWW;
