Crohn's disese and ulcerative colitis are important pediatric diseases with frequent onset in the first decades of life. Although the clinical manifestations and treatment strategies for the therapy of inflammatory bowel disease are generally similar to those seen in adults, there are a number of unique problems encountered in the pediatric population. Growth failure complicating malnutrition is a particularly important problem in younger patients. The limited number of therapeutic studies in children and the lack of appropriate pediatric formulations increase the challenge of treating pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.
