Carbon Dioxide Reduction by Saving Energy Consumption in Small Scale Industries - A Case Study

Energy plays an important role in industrial production. Apart from the four factors of production energy acted as the fifth factors of production. Rapid industrialization and intensive use of energy has resulted in energy crisis on the one side and environmental damages on the other side by emitting Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Conservation through improvement in the technologies is one of the important and effective solutions for the problems of energy crisis and environmental damages. Several studies reveals that there is amble change for energy conservation in the industrial sector but the barriers identified to tap this potential are: lack of information on options for achieving energy conservation, lack of capital for technology upgradation, inadequacy of institutional arrangements and lack of proper pricing policies. The inefficient use of energy causes high emission of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and it contribute to local pollution and other ecological damages. This article presents an estimation of CO2 emission reduction by saving energy consumption in small scale industries. The total fuel wood consumption of 119 sampled brick units in the district to produce 1,708 Lakh brick was about 74,663 Tones. The total energy consumed in terms of kWh is equal to 346.43 x 10(6). The energy saving possibilities is 19.12 per cent. The Co-2 emission from the brick units is estimated by using the formula Sigma (Fuel consumption in the industrial sector) x (Carbon Emission Factor (CEF)) x (fraction oxidized (f (o))) x (44/12) and the estimated value is 98760 Tones. By conserving energy in the sampled brick units, the CO2 emission to the tune19090.31 Tonne can be reduced.
