CONTROL OF RADIOACTIVE-WASTE BY PUBLIC-HEALTH DEPARTMENT

In the form of questions and answers, the measures taken to prevent an increase of radioactivity in the atmosphere and water in France are described. It is pointed out that French regulations are even stricter than those of the International Commission for Radiological Protection regarding workers in nuclear installations and population in general. Over the past years, effluents from nuclear centers remained much below the authorized limits in France. It is concluded that the development of the nuclear program can be pursued without endangering public health if present vigilance is maintained.
