摘要
Objective: To examine the accuracy and effectiveness of headache management at the primary care level. Data Sources: The review is based on the most recent data on prevalence of headache in primary care, diagnosis, and classification of headache, and pharmacologic migraine management. Study Selection: Articles were selected on the basis of timeliness of study, relevancy, and significant results. Data Extraction: Studies were classified by type, including epidemiology, diagnosis and classification, and management techniques. Data was used as it appears in each study. Data Synthesis: Accurate diagnosis of headache is an imperative first step in its management. Pharmacologic treatment options include abortive and prophylactic measures, which may be enhanced by combining with nonpharmacologic methods. Advances in migraine pharmacology have led to improved agents that exhibit fewer side effects. Conclusion: Although no cure for headache exists, the disorder can be successfully managed with drug therapy combined with nonpharmacologic means without significant adverse effects.
