Mario de Andrade and the creation of a tradition

In this paper we propose to make a first approach to the concept of Nation developed by Mario de Andrade in his artistic project. We will first focus on the dialogue between modernism and romanticism, two movements in which national interpretation is highly relevant. In this context we will see the relationship between Mario de Andrade and Jose de Alencar from their approach to the indigenous theme, although presented in different ways. The center of this study will focus on observing the features of the Andrade's draft in one of his more important fictional works to think about the concept of nation, as it is Macunaima (1928). In the work we will mainly discuss two related areas: cultural anthropophagy and rewriting of popular sources, mainly myths and legends.
