The two-dimensional problem of melting of a massive metallic target by a constant normal surface heat source is considered. The kinetics of formation of the liquid phase is investigated taking into account absorption of the latent heat of the phase transition right up to temperatures close to the boiling point. Approximate analytical expressions describing the temperature field and rhe form of the melt pool are derived.
