摘要
The shape of detrital quartz grains, mainly achieved by abrasion during transportation, has been long since observed and described by sedimentologists. The question is to quantify this shape by a limited number of relevant parameters. Fractal geometry yields a more complete answer. The roughness of a grain outline may be correlated with its fractal dimension, obtained from image processing. The current analysis, bearing on samples of different environments, is an early proposal of a fractal based sand typology.
