摘要
Biotechnology has been widely acknowledged as one of the modern tools for improving agricultural production. However, international and national debates have brought into sharp focus the double-edged nature of this technology; raising fears, concerns, as well as mistrust of the technology and its products-especially the genetically modified (GM) products. Low awareness levels and lack of authoritative information and knowledge are the main causes of such fears and concerns. A study of consumer awareness and perceptions of biotechnology inKenya indicated that 70.6% (71.5% males and 69.3% females) have heard about biotechnology. Of these, 75% were aware of genetic modification, while 66% had a clear understanding of tissue culture. The majority (89%) also acknowledged that biotechnology can contribute to food and nutrition security in Kenya. However, consumers had some concerns such as the safety and risk issues that could result from the use of biotechnology and its products, the effect of biotechnology on crop biodiversity and the environment, the lack of a biotechnology policy, and the nonlabelling of biotechnology products. Consumers felt that there is a need for increased awareness, more public information on biotechnology products, and further research with the full involvement of all stakeholders.
