摘要
This is the final volume in a special three-part series dealing with Type II applications of information technology in education. Type I applications make it faster, easier, or otherwise more convenient to continue teaching in traditional ways. Type II applications make new and better ways of teaching available, ways not possible without the use of information technology. The authors look back over the past 25 years of developments in this new field, and speculate that higher education is poised on the verge of a distance education revolution. This revolution, fueled by the increasing availability of free, downloadable programs for voice and video over the Internet, is likely to be particularly important at the master's level. The future for information technology in education seems bright, particularly in light of the articles in this final collection, which consist of project reports, case studies, and software applications that represent Type II applications of technology.
