The novel Quincas Borba, written by Machado de Assis, is partly published for the first time in "A Estacao" Magazine, from June 15th 1886 to September 15th 1891. At the end of that month, the novel is published as a book, although the text had significant changes. These changes show the patient and laborious writer who distinguishes, from the support material, the peculiarities of each publication which are interconnected to the receptor image. Consequently, the identification of the use of technical procedures reveals the writer's critical reflection. He is aware that textual composition cannot be separated from its materiality and genre.
