摘要
A century ago John Dewey began to work out his philosophy of education at the University of Chicago. Although historians have subjected this period of Dewey's career to considerable scrutiny, we have neglected the manner in which his thinking was shaped by the fierce conflicts of capital and labor in late nineteenth-century America. Dewey belongs among the radical "social Christians" of the 1880s and 1890s, and at Chicago he sought to give expression to the powerful ethical critique of wage labor and the vision of industrial democracy of these advocates of a cooperative commonwealth.
