Bowel obstruction in the elderly: a rare case of gallstone ileus in 80-year old woman

We report the case of a 80-year old woman admitted to hospital for abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, and episodes of biliary vomit. Instrumental examinations showed diffused bowel pneumatization with occlusion, and a calcified calculus near the ileo-cecal valve. The patient underwent enterolitotomy treatment with resolution of bowel occlusion, and rapid improvement of clinical conditions. In elderly patient biliary ileus may cause bowel obstruction, and might be taken into account in the differential diagnosis.
