AN INDUCED CR3+ CENTER IN GAMMA-IRRADIATED LITAO3

An induced Cr3+ center in gamma-irradiated LiTaO3 has been investigated by employing a Bruker X-band EPR spectrometer at room temperature. Since no EPR signal could be measured in the as-grown crystal by the Czochralski method, the sample was irradiated with Co-60 gamma-rays up to about 1.5 Mrad. The induced Cr3+ center was similar to the previously reported Cr3+ center, but turned out to be thermally unstable. The signal intensities reduced rapidly with time, and eventually disappeared totally after 72 hours. A possible origin of this induced Cr3+ center is the mechanism hnu + Cr2+ --> Cr3+ + e-. It is proposed that the Cr3+ ions preferably substitute for either Li1+ or Ta5+.
