Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I

Introduction: Complex regional pain syndrome type I is characterised by pain, swelling, vasomotor disturbances and impaired function of the affected limbs. Material and Methods: The paper presents the etiopathogenesis of complex regional pain syndrome and its clinical presentation and describes the physical treatment and rehabilitation used to treat it. The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is suggested. The present indications for the use of HBOT are listed and the effect of HBOT on the body is presented, including the local effect on ischaemic and hypoxic tissues. The methods of conducting HBOT are discussed and possible side effects are specified. Conclusions: 1. Complex regional pain syndrome is a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problem. 2. Early diagnosis and introduction of focused physical therapy and rehabilitation, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, may allow for full restoration of limb function.
