摘要
A method to isolate cellulose from henequen (A. fourcroydes) fiber in high yield is presented, where the agave fiber is subjected to a prehydrolysis with dilute H2SO4 solution, followed by a hypochlorite step with NaClO, and alkaline extraction of the chlorolignins formed. The effects of concentration, time and temperature in each step are presented. The prehydrolysis stage significantly enhances subsequent steps; on the other hand, a high concentration of NaClO during the extraction degrades cellulose, even if the pH is kept to a value of 9. Under the conditions tested, purified cellulose pulp having at least 96% by weight of alpha-cellulose can be obtained.
