Vertebral body fractures and osteoporosis. Therapy concepts

Due to the increasing aging population, osteoporotic vertebral fractures, including traumatic fractures, yet even more frequent causes of pain and disability. Conservative treatment remains a mainstay of the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral fractures. Minimally invasive treatment strategies, e.g. vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, assume greater importance in cases where conservative treatment fails. The treatment of complex vertebral fractures can be surgically challenging in the case of osteoporosis; however, cement augmentation of pedicle screws, additional cement augmentation of the fractured vertebra as well as anterior stabilization are possible approaches to treat these fractures with satisfactory results.
