Management of river flow and control of water quality in an industrial river

A simple mathematical model is proposed for the study of water quality in an industrial river. With emphasis on thermal pollution, the model is used to identify the state variables and the control parameters and to determine the associated evolution equations. The model is applied to the problem of the optimal control of the river and its basin, taking into account the constraints which arise from national and international regulations or technical limitations; and the principles of a scientific approach to management, through mathematical modelling, are discussed.
