RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAINING THERAPISTS BASED ON MANUALS FOR PSYCHOTHERAPY-RESEARCH

A treatment manual for supportive-expressive psychoanalytic psychotherapy was written in order to train therapists in this form of treatment. Based on psychotherapy research over the last fifteen years, as well as extensive experience in training therapists with the manual, several recommendations are presented. These recommendations propose what issues should be emphasized in training, as well as proposed teaching methods which have proven effective. Typical resistances by trainees to teaching efforts are also discussed.
