摘要
Employing a focus group interview, this exploratory study investigated the influences on the social work career choice of recently graduated (spring 2007) Hispanic and African-American male BSW and MSW students (N = 7). Also investigated were the views of these men regarding entering a female majority profession and their future in the profession. The informants identified three factors as influencing their social work career choice: (1) personal experience with a social worker, (2) wanting to give something back to the community, and (3) preexisting internalized altruism. Regarding entering a female majority profession, the informants believe they are bringing alternative perspectives that will help to strengthen the profession. The informants also believe they have a bright future in the profession. Implications for social work programs are discussed.
