EVALUATION OF MUSTARD (BRASSICA-JUNCEA) VARIETIES IN ASSOCIATION WITH POTATO (SOLANUM-TUBEROSUM)

In a 2-year field investigation 'Varuna' proved the best among 7 test varieties ('Varuna', Rohini', 'Vaibhav, 'Vardan', 'Krashana', 'Kranti' and 'Pusa Bold') of mustard [Brassic juncea (L.) Czernj. & Cosson) for association of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), as it gave the highest seed yield with a minimum depression in tuber yield of potato. This consequently resulted in the highest net return from the sequence as a whole. Intercropping of mustard, in general, proved about 6 times more profitable sequence than pure crop of potato. The extent of autotoxic effect of potato (17.18%) was almost equal to teletoxic effect of mustard varieties (16.89%) in general, but the teletoxic effect of 'Varuna' (5.87%) was minimum and that of 'Vaibhava' (23.99%) was maximum.
