Ramos Sucre read by Angel Rama: praxis of a critical system

Traditional literary criticism has considered Antonio Ramos Sucre an aesthetician and escapist poet, cutt-off from his surrounding Latin American reality. However, thanks to the Angel Rama's reading of the poet from Cumana, we are able to appreciate a man who was more connected to his reality, his roots, and his historical period. In view of this, we approach the mechanisms through which Angel Rama elaborates his system of literary criticism, considering notions important to him such as transculturization or system. In more specific terms, we attempt to observe how this criticism works in the particular case of Ramos Sucre, by reviewing El universo simbolico de Jose Antonio Ramos Sucre (1978).
