摘要：
It is shown that when the proper-time method is used the effective action in quantum field theory can be represented in the form of a sum of modular-invariant expressions. An analogous representation is obtained for the vacuum energy of an open and a closed string; for a closed string the sum can be reduced to a single modular-invariant expression.
