It is proved that the smallest number nu = nu(n, F) such that. the matrix algebra M(n)(F) (n greater-than-or-equal-to 2) over an arbitrary field F can be generated (as an algebra) by nu idempotents is [GRAPHICS] The minimal number of idempotent generators of a split finite-dimensional semi-simple algebra is also obtained.
