OFFERING NEW SERVICES AND OPERATION SYSTEMS AIMED AT THE ACHIEVEMENT OF NTTS VI-AND-P SERVICE VISION - RESEARCH-AND-DEVELOPMENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN FISCAL 1991

NTT carries out R & D work that is directly related to the company's business operations, research activities designed to contribute to the global advancement of science and technology and also development programs aimed at penetrating the fruits of research throughout society. The guiding principle of all these R & D efforts is NTT's corporate philosophy, which is to provide optimum telecommunications services and reliability, supported by technological developments undertaken from an international perspective and with the aim of contributing to the creation of an enhanced quality of life and culture. The specific priorities of NTT's R & D programs are to develop cutting-edge technologies for strengthening the networks that form the backbone of telecommunications and for providing a variety of advanced services, with the objective of realizing the VI & P vision of visual, intelligent and personal communications services in the 21st century. The major accomplishments highlighting P & D during the 1991 fiscal year (ended March 31, 1992) include: (1) development of various new services and equipments to satisfy diversified customer needs, such as the "Message-in Service" and the "mova" portable telephone, (2) development of optical transmission systems, optical subscriber systems and other key network technologies for supporting the provision of future telecommunications services, (3) development of operation systems, such as an integrated mobile communications operation system, for providing high-quality services, and (4) advances in the development of cutting-edge and foundational technologies, such as 0.1 mum class CMOS devices, for supporting future telecommunications services. The following introduces some of the principal achievements of the R & D activities carried out in fiscal 1991 by the research laboratories and development sectors.
