摘要
The story of Prince Aja and Princess Indumata, as it is told in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa, first became known in ancient Java and Bali in Mpu Monaguna's thirteenth century epic kakawin Sumanasantaka. The kakawin and its story of the prince and princess proved popular with Balinese audiences in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The article is a first attempt to explain the epic poem's popularity at this time. It draws on discussion of the kakawin itself, a kidung version of the story and two Kamasan paintings that derive from this period.
