The Place of Ordained Local Ministry in the Church of England

Research into the change in self-image of Ordained Local Ministers during ministerial training revealed a reluctance to change in ways that would threaten relationships with the local congregation. Comparison with theological, psychological and sociological theories of identity formation indicates that Ordained Local Ministers need to forge an identity that is distinct from that of other clergy. This identity needs to be encouraged and supported during training and the particular contribution of Ordained Local Ministers affirmed at diocesan and national level. As mission becomes the highest priority of the Church of England, Ordained Local Ministers have a distinctive and crucial role.
