摘要
The effect of various degrees of purification of nickel and platinum surfaces on the rate and kinetic relationships for isotopic exchange between hydrogen and deuterium has been studied in detail and compared with the use of ultravacuum and without it. Based on this investigation it is concluded that heat treatment is a necessary condition for obtaining reproducible results from kinetic investigations in vacuum systems. A combination with ultrahigh vacuum favors such reproducibility being achieved more rapidly, but it is not found to be a necessary condition in all cases for examining the true kinetic relationships of catalysis over metals.
