Thermolysis of the mixed-metal tetranuclear dicarbide cluster [(mu(3)-C=C-Fp)Ru-3(mu-H)(CO)(9)] (2) and one-electron oxidation of the anion (PPh(4))[(mu(3)-C=C-Fp)Ru-3(CO)(9)] (3) derived from 2 lead to coupling of the (C-2)FeRu3 core to give the novel heptanuclear Cp(2)Fe(2)Ru(5)(mu(5)-C-2)(2)(CO)(17) (5), CpFeRu(6)(mu(5)-C-2)(mu(5)-C2H)(CO)(16) (6), and the octanuclear cluster compound Cp(2)Fe(2)Ru(6)(mu(6)-C-2)(2)(CO)(17) (4) With the multiply-bridging C-2 and C2H ligand.
