A NEW PHASE IN AL-NI-TI ALLOYS MADE FROM MECHANICALLY ALLOYED POWDERS

摘要
A new phase (the ''chi phase'') has been found in Al-Ni-Ti alloys produced by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The structure of this new phase is similar to that of the NiTi2 compound (f.c.c., E9(3)) but with a lattice parameter of about 1.14-1.15 nm. A variety of additional experiments with alloys produced by arc melting and rapid quenching indicate that oxygen contamination (0.5-1.0 wt.%) is responsible for the occurrence of the new phase. Some suggestions are made regarding the atomic arrangement in the lattice of the chi phase.
