Issues regarding the safety of erythropoietin (EPO) administration to anemic patients with chronic renal failure prior to the need for dialysis are discussed. The manner in which patients should be evaluated prior to EPO treatment is discussed. Guidelines for the initiation, titration, and maintenance dosing of EPO are provided, along with recommendations for monitoring and follow-up evaluation.
