The (T, p, ρ) relations of liquid methanol have been measured with a constant-volume-cell apparatus, at temperatures from 205 K to 321 K and pressures to 50 MPa. The apparatus and the experimental technique are described. Estimated uncertainties are within ±0.0005·ρ. Two methods based on the maximum-likelihood principle have been applied to reduce repeated measurements to both discrete mean values and to an equation of state. Thermodynamic properties including speed of sound are calculated. Comparison with results by Sun et al. derived from speed-of-sound measurements shows a maximum difference of 0.0008·p. © 1993 Academic Press Ltd.
