A criterion for the existence of a positive solution for the first order difference equation Δ(xn - cxn - m) + pnxn - k = 0, pn ≥ 0 is established. Results are also obtained for the oscillation and nonoscillation of solutions of a second order difference equation Δ2(xn - cxn - m) = pnxn - k, where the pn are either of constant sign or are oscillatory. Some of the results are sharp. © 1992.
